Dr Atul Kumar is the Medical Director of AKIO.

He is the first to introduce micro incision and 3-D vitreous surgery in India. He has served in the field of vitreoretinal medicine and surgery for 40 years at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He was the Chief of the Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences (2016-2021)

Education, Experience and honours

  •  Sr. Residency from Dr. R.P. Centre, AIIMS New Delhi India & joined as Assistant Professor in the same institute in 1987 (Discipline: -Vitreous-Retina).

  • Retina Fellowship from University of Maryland, Baltimore, USA, 1990.

  • 339 indexed & non-indexed publications.

  • Edited a book on “RETINA: Medical and Surgical Management“ 2018 , 1st edition Jaypee Bros Publishers. 2nd edition revised 2021

  • Chapters in over 24 books

  • Instrumental in getting Dr RP Centre, AIIMS re-recognized as a WHO Collaborating Centre in 2016.

  • Fellowship of the prestigious National Academy of Medical Sciences, India, October 2006.

  • For contribution to healthcare in the field of Vitreo-Retinal Diseases and Surgery the President of India awarded him “Padma Shri” in 2007

  • Awarded Dr. BC Roy National Award for excellence in Ophthalmic Sciences(Highest award in the field of Medicine) by the President of India, in June 2016.

  • Appointed Hony. Advisor Ophthalmology to Govt. of India. May 2016.

  • Awarded FRCS Edinburgh by Royal College of Surgeons 2017.

  • Member National Board of Examinations Specialist Board in discipline of Vitreo Retinal Surgery, Ministry of Health &  Family Welfare, Govt of India 2020. 

  • Awarded CN Shroff Oration by AIOS in 2021 for exemplary work in Retinal diseases and surgery.
